Two years Let's CHANGE: How can we end female genital mutilation (FGM) in the European Union and beyond?

On Tuesday, September 15, 2020, the final conference of the two-year project Let’s CHANGE (co-financed by the European Union) took place. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the conference was organized online and only implemented live on site in Paris for a small group of people.

The conference was entitled “How to overcome challenges in ending Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the European Union (and beyond)?” and was simultaneously interpreted in English and French.

International Women’s Day 2020 – the Office for Gender Equality in Dortmund hosted „WomenPowerFuture“ forum

Cover of the brochureCover of the brochure. © Stadt DortmundLike every year, in 2020 too, active women and women’s organisations from the region had the chance to register at the office for gender equality in Dortmund in order to announce a self-designed event. TDF member and volunteer worker on female genital mutilation (FGM), Silvia Kaufmann, participated in the action. She was supported by FGM expert and community member Oumou Diallo.

“WomenPowerFuture” – that was this year’s motto of the International Women’s Day. Different fora provided the opportunity to discuss current gender themes, strengthen the own competences or gain ideas for job and lifestyle. Interested people could register their own forum at the Dortmund city hall and the office for gender equality, then, took care of organising a suitable location and designing a supporting programme. Under the title “How to identify and prevent traditional practices against girls and women”, the workshop rose awareness on the consequences of female genital mutilation and early and forced marriage.

How to Talk About Female Genital Mutilation – A Manual

In cooperation with the European network End FGM, TERRE DES FEMMES has composed a manual on how to talk about female genital mutilation (FGM) containing recommendations about the correct wording. The brochure shall serve as a brief practical guide.

The manual targets two different groups: On the one side, it helps journalists, scholars, politicians and other stakeholders who write reports or articles about FGM. Thus, a list of “dos” and “don’ts” has been established in order to enable a clear and non-stigmatising approach to the topic.
