Women need to be empowered in every respect and especially against traditional, harmful practices, so that they gain more self-confidence and can decide independently. This is the only way we can defeat the female genital mutilation one day. That is what we stand up for

Area of intervention: Three provinces in the kingdom Mossi: Kadiogo, Sanmetenga, and Nahouri, as well as in districts of the capital Ouagadougou and surrounding areas and villages, Burkina Faso

Supported by TDF since: 1998

Target group: village leaders, religious authorities, and teachers, women affected or threatened by FGM, as well as the whole population

Background:

  • Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries worldwide
  • Less than one fifth of the girl and women are illiterate
  • In 2013, more than 76% of all girls and women were affected by FGM (UNICEF)
  • Many girls and women affected by FGM suffer from pain and infections throughout their lives, often girls bleed to death during the procedure
  • FGM is forbidden by law since 1996 but it is still practiced, mostly on very young girls
  • Village leaders and circumcisers own a lot of respect, that’s why the work of Bangr Nooma is so important

Project activities:

  • Targeted educational work and awareness campaigns about the overcoming of FGM
  • Training for staff members of the campaign work (Animateur/Animatrice)
  • Educational work with the aim of a change of the social norms towards an end of FGM
  • Installation of committees of villagers for the protection of threatened girls
  • Support for affected girls and women through emergency surgeries

Successes:

  • Until now the organisation reached over 800.000 people in Burkina Faso
  • Over 33.000 girls have been saved from FGM
  • There are committees of villagers against FGM in over 820 villages
  • Over 300 circumcisers have obtained micro credits and are making a living differently now, about 180 of these work for Bangr Nooma
  • In June 2015 a new centre for the protection against violence was opened
  • In 2015, there were more than 400 awareness activities and 20 emergency operations
